Head explosion tutorial

Pretty comprehensive tutorial showing how to make a head appear to explode in After Effects. I especially like the idea of having blood splattered on the screen, adds to the video's gruesome quality. The rules are slightly different in mine because it's a dolls head thats going to explode, so blood might be inappropriate. One possibility is to create a latex mask and insert a balloon inside . I'll film this in front of a green screen and start to inflate the balloon until the head begins to swell. The i'll take a pin and pop it, hopefully creating a tiny explosion. I could then gather any worthwhile remnants of the head to be superimposed onto the screen instead of the blood.
