Metropolis - Fritz Lang (1926)

Films about two different class systems, the planners/thinkers live above ground, the workers/doers live underground and do all the work. A mediator between the social classes is imprisoned and a replica robot is built to take her place and unsettle underground workers; whose subsequent rioting destroys parts of the cities mechanical infrastructure.

The film (set in 2026) has a strong art deco style, typifying the vogue of the 1920's.
Loads of classic sci-fi visual cliché's instantly recognisable to technology. Flashing lights, test tubes, eerie contraptions, gives a negative view of technology as it is utilised to destroy a socitey; breaking Asimov's rule no.1.

Strange soundtrack, ambient - reminds me of the orb/future sounds of london, which in turn implies synthetic sound, or the machine's attempt at imitating nature.
